Why do tires need to be balanced?

Although it has become less common due to technological advances, not every tire or wheel is perfectly balanced when made. A slight imbalance of the rim and tire can lead to a serious imbalance of the wheel assembly. The tire and rim are almost always made symmetrically and to the desired design size. Due to minor changes in the manufacturing process, the design does not end up exactly as intended, but within reasonable tolerances. These tolerances lead to unbalanced wheels and tires.
