Tire patches, external plugs, combination units and sealants may all reduce air loss, but they are not interchangeable. Some are designed only for temporary roadside mobility, while others form part of a professional repair completed after the tire has been removed and inspected.

External Plugs and Tire Sealants

Once the tire has been demounted and judged repairable, the injury channel can be filled with a repair stem and the innerliner can be sealed with a compatible patch. These may be installed as two separate components or as a one-piece combination unit, often called a patch-plug or mushroom plug.

A combination unit must match the injury diameter and angle. If the puncture angle is outside the unit’s permitted range, a two-piece stem-and-patch repair may be required. Product size alone never makes an injury repairable.
