Well-maintained tires are essential to the safety of driving. Treads is the main focus in tire maintenance. Usually, tire treads should be inspected during maintenance for adequate depth and abnormal wear patterns. The most common tire defects are punctured tires resulting in air leaks and insufficient air pressure. In many cases, nails and screws are the culprits for punctured tire treads. For internal inspection, a tire changer is usually used to demount the tire from the rim. Sometimes the tire can be repaired when the tire is found to be punctured in full-thickness. Whether or not a tire can be repaired depends on the type of breakage.  In most cases, the largest puncture that is able to be safely repaired is 1/4 inch on the center area, around 1-1.5’’ measured from the shoulder of the tire.

A Tire Spreader is needed to perform the tire inspection. Besides full thickness punctures, the tire bead and lining should also be detected. The defect should be marked with a marking crayon. If a marked defect is repairable, the inner liner surface should be cleaned using a pre-buff cleaner (a solvent specially formulated to dissolve mold-release lubricants and other contaminants creating a clean surface prior to innerliner buffing).  Then a scraper is used to scrape the liner surface over the zone of the puncture. This process helps to prepare the inner liner surface prior to repair. After that, drill the injury hole with a low speed buffer topped with a cutter to cut the broken tire belts.

It is recommended that the hole voids be filled with tire plugs for one-piece or two-piece repairs. Get the inner surface prepared with a buffing wheel, clean the surface with a wire brush and a and vacuum, then vulcanizing cement can be placed on the inner surface to fix the tire strings in place. After carefully placing the patch, and get it painted with inner liner sealer, the excess tire string outside the tire surface should be trimmed. Finally the tire is mounted and re-balanced using a tire changer and a wheel balancer.
